This week’s Student of the Week is Darby Vigis! Darby’s kind and compassionate nature has shone brightly throughout the term and beyond. He is always ready to lend a helping hand and shows genuine care and empathy toward both his teachers and peers. Darby’s maturity, along with his willingness to assist others and his supportive attitude, make him a truly deserving recipient of this week’s title. Congratulations, Darby!
It is my absolute pleasure to introduce our new staff member Lynley Hall. Lynley is joining us as a highly experienced Science teacher. We have welcomed Lynley over from Lytton High School where she has spent the last 20 years working in a number of roles, including leadership positions. Lynley is passionate about innovative teaching practices and excited to develop her understanding and practice of our Learning to Learn framework. It is always wonderful to have additional staff join the team, in particular secondary staff. While there are many things to learn when joining OneSchool Global, the fundamentals of good teaching always apply and we are excited to have such wonderful experience join us on Gisborne Campus.
I am sure you will all join me in welcoming Lynley to our wonderful school community.
Last Monday, our Year 9-13 students took a fascinating trip to Moutohorā (Whale Island), a wildlife sanctuary brimming with natural beauty and history. After meeting our tour guides in Whakatane at 9:30 AM, we journeyed by boat to the island, where we explored the DOC tracks in two groups. Along the way, students encountered native bird species such as Saddlebacks, Bellbirds, Kākāriki, the very rare Dotterel bird, native Skinks, as well as Tuatara and Kiwi footprints. We even spotted seals lounging on the island’s shores! At the island’s peak, once the site of a Māori Pā, students gained insights into the cultural significance of the land. Afterward, we enjoyed a well-deserved lunch at a unique geothermal hot water beach, digging pools to soak our feet in naturally warm water—a perfect ending to our day of exploration.
CCA – Year 7&8
It is all go in the Year 7&8 Learning Centre, at the moment, as we work on our cross-curricular assignment, currently diving into all things mathematical to support our assignment. We are developing our knowledge of Statistics - gathering data, collating and analyzing that data and then producing tables. We are also upping our Measurement and Geometry skills - designing nets and producing drawings to scale.
Then, there is our IT Skill Learning, producing those tables and researching everything there is to know about the food we are snacking on and their nutritional value.
And then, there are all that communication, those collaborations and working independently. Check out Leo, Lucca and Tori-Lee designing their packaging and Mariah and Demi developing their gluten free recipe cards for sale at Market Day. As we said, it’s ALL GO!!!
Tonui Collab Excursion
In week 9, the Primary Learning Centre visited Tonui Collab, at the Matai Medical Research Institute. We began by working in pairs to create a 3-dimensional cube out of 7 different shaped blocks. This was a great lesson in both resilience and collaboration, and set us up nicely for the coming tasks. We then moved onto playing games that reflected healthy eating - we discovered that you had to collect the healthy foods and avoid the unhealthy ones.
There was such a fantastic amount of learning condensed into one afternoon. We all thoroughly enjoyed it and can't wait until our next visit.
